Standings Week 3

*** ANNOUNCEMENT ***
Next week (11/4) will be played at the Seward Community Center (the old Middle School) at 304 Sea Lion Ave #1347, Seward, AK 99664 instead of the AVTEC Gym. Normal times for games.

My my my, we find ourselves together again after a competitive bout of volleyball. Some ups, some downs, and some all arounds… especially with the standings. A four way tie for first place after this week. Lets talk about it.

5:30 - AVTEC vs. Hits Happen

This was a really competitive game of good, clean volleyball. Both teams have some players that obviously have some volleyballin’ under their belt making both games quite close. Hits Happen for once had not only enough players, but a surplus after their left-handed lasher showed up to lay it down. With some beautiful sets and some magical returns, they took the first game over AVTEC. AVTEC was down, but not out. This young, but tough team came into the second set strong and had some good long runs, helped out by some saves by their fearless leader Jamie. Both teams are drastically better than they were in Week 1, but these AVTEC students still have something to learn as they dropped the second set as well. Despite this game not going to three games, it was a tough game throughout.  Both teams are now 2-1, and are the first two teams to join our 4 way tie for the top spot.

6:30 - Bumpin’ Uglies vs. Set and Be Set

From the start, this game was as close as could be. The spread of points throughout  was not more than a few points with over a dozen lead changes. Bumpin’ Uglies came out looking uglier than ever, but fortunately their play was significantly less ugly and they took the first game by only three points. After a close finish, Set and Be Set got into the second set feeling real good, and through some of Danny’s signature old fashioned trickery of putting the ball where the other team isn’t, they took the second set 25-23. The third game was a toss up with everyone in attendance taking their bets as to who was going to win, and this last game came down to the very end. Set and Be Set fighting to protect their undefeated record, and Bumpin’ Uglies trying to create some upward movement in the standings. In the end, it was Rocky's squad of the highest flying, ugliest looking, always having a good time bunch that took this game giving Bumpin' Uglies and Set and Be Set both a 2-1 record to wedge them into a four way tie for first place.

7:30 - BYE (The Team) vs. Tony’s Bar

We all love this volleyball league for how competitive this little coastal town gets over the winter. Unfortunately, this was not the best display of that competitive spirit as this game was not especially close. BYE came into this game without much of their core team likely due to being somewhere warmer, or just making like the band Disturbed and are “down with the sickness.” Either way, BYE was still able to field a full team, but largely due to their lack of cohesion and height were unable to put up much of a defense against Tony’s Bar. They fought their hardest and found themselves down by 24-10, so interim captain Tara called a timeout at a key time in hopes of starting a 16 point comeback. Their plan worked exactly as planned… but only for one point, BYE lost the set 11-25. Despite the play across the net, it does not take away from Tony’s Bar putting on the best showing of skill that they have all season as they were firing on all cylinders. The addition of Andy was huge this game with some big hits and blocks while the rest of the team showed up big as well with Sean and Samantha being key players for this week. The second set played very similarly to the first, and again BYE was down with their opponents on the brink of closing out the win. That’s when they had the idea again to call a hail mary timeout in hopes of icing the other team and starting a 13 point comeback. Unfortunately for BYE, it did not work this time as they lost 25-13 giving Tony’s Bar their first win of the season.

A four way makes next week a pivotal part of the season. Don’t miss it by going to the AVTEC gym instead of the Community Center. See you all next week!
