From a large brick and metal, rectangular building, in a large room void of much else than a rubber floor came the sounds of high pitched squeaks, heavy breathing, cursing abound and a rhythmic thud that signaled the start of something! You’d think it was the lead-in to a horror movie, but it was something much scarier than that. It was a signal that Sewardites have begun to wander their way indoors for the winter in hopes of finding community or crushing the will of their neighbors in the Seward Recreational Basketball League!
Let’s breakdown week one!
Tuesday October, 13th
On Tuesday the league began with some new faces and an entirely new team. First to battle were the consistent teams of ILWU and AVTEC featuring a fresh batch of new students. AVTEC quickly took a 10 point lead, only to see it dwindle by some fine three-point shooting from Lane (team-leading 14 points). AVTEC managed to hold onto a slight lead holding off ILWU like a cat trying to catch a string toy inching close but never managing to grasp the lead. Tristan (tied game-high 15 points) led the way behind the arc for AVTEC while Zach (game-high 15 points) dominated the paint. ILWU never backed down from that string toy, however and with one final shot were able to grasp it and rip it off the string claiming a 46-45 victory.
If you think that was a heart-pounding game, the nightcap may have one-upped it! SPRD is the new kid on the block and they came in looking to make a name for themselves against the defending champion of 907 Elite. In a game defined by streaky shooting each team saw large leads come and go. Ryan M. (game-high 19 points) rainbow drained threes all night long as Taylor (17 points) had flames coming out of his hand to give SPRD the lead nearing the end of the game. Jesse (15 points) was having none of it for 907 Elite and decided to power his way down in the paint for a game-winning jump shot as 907 Elite held off a last ditch effort from SPRD in a 68-66 victory.
Thursday October, 15th
Moving on from a wild night there was great anticipation in the air heading into Thursday. The six o’clock game featured ILWU taking on SPRD. With some sweet passing and well-balanced scoring, ILWU took an early lead and cruised to a victory over a cold SPRD team. The final score was 65-48. ILWU was led by some superior post play of Peter (10 points) and some serious hustle of Nick (8 points). SPRD was cold, but Taylor went all Lebron James at the end of the game to try and keep SPRD in it by scoring a game-high 20 points. With the win ILWU sits at 2-0 while the loss drops SPRD to 0-2.
The final game of the week was a matchup between 907 Elite and AVTEC. In a similar type of game 907 Elite took a lead and never looked back. Turning back the clock to his JAG playing days, Coop (game-high 25 points) scored at will, leading 907 to a 60-49 win. On the other end, Zach again chipped away with 18 points for AVTEC while Ashton rose to the occasion with 18 of his own. AVTEC now sits at 0-2, while 907 Elite ups their record to 2-0.
So the stage is set for tonight, two 2-0 teams battle for undefeated rights while two 0-2 teams look to end the scourge of early season woes. Tune in tonight! Standings and stats below.
