Racquetballers!
WEEK TWO
Tony v Glo
A whole day was spent before this match even started with trash talk via text message. Emotions were high by the time the glass door swung open. “Some people learn to play racquetball during league play”, Glo mumbled before entering the court. Tony reminded Glo of the basic rules and threw in a couple more glaring comments before getting started. Glo won the lag shot and started off in the service box. Her brain-to-racquet coefficient is quite high for a newcomer in the court, but Tony took full advantage in the court with his season of racquetball behind him from this past spring. He sprung into action and won the first game 15-4. They stepped out for a brief intermission, volleyballers excitedly entering the gymnasium for their first game of the season. Glo was determined to do better in the second game, and though her score did not improve, I truly felt some improvements were made in her game. Tony won in the second game 15-3 and walked out of the court with stars in his eyes. He was feeling greatness. We all should. Way to go!
Christiana v Jenn
Bronze league veteran Christiana Smith and Jenn Haughes made their 7:15pm match with a small crew watching the game. We all were glad to catch this game! Christiana dominated in the first match, taking her experience and top-notch enjoyment of the game to the finish in a brilliant 15-2 win. Jenn, a longtime competitor in our volleyball leagues, was not about to give up after one tough match. They took to the court in the second game, and we were astounded with the competition these two had. Christiana was put to the test as Jenn started to experiment with kill shots – quite the skill to develop this early in the season! The service box had a new occupant every other point, and the round lasted quite a long time. We all grew older and wiser during this one, folks. At the end of it all, Jenn pushed it to a tie-breaking round, winning 15-11. The two reentered the court together for a final time, aiming to win a game to 11 points. This was an even more exhausting match-up than the second round. Christiana created a large lead that was soon to be crushed by Jenn. They were tied at 11 points. At one point, it seemed that Jenn was the victor with a dicey call that Christiana was willing to give up. None of us watching wanted the game to end. We called the hinder, and they got back in there. Christiana, after one of the longest games of her life, walked out victorious with a 13-11 win. Bravo!
