Well, look who we have here! I spy a extremely talented racquetball player in our midst! Welcome. Come closer! The water is nice. And by water, I mean the balmy hot misty temperature of the AVTEC gym racquetball court. The light is as harsh as ever. The dust bunnies have been evicted and it smells like windex. If you were lucky enough to play your game during the actual scheduled time, you will be rewarded with a game write-up!

WEEK ONE

Steve v Ron

It’s worth mentioning that this is a special Platinum League in the sense that you all are in it. And you all have whacky schedules so a bunch of games will be played at random times during this league. To start off, Ron and Steve played their game for 10/16 tonight. So you could say they hopped in a DeLorean and floored it to 88 M.P.H. They were back… to the future [Mulaney] The fellas got in the court and warmed up as we do and got the game underway. The two exchanged serves for several minutes before any meaningful lead was developed. Steve launched into action and put some points on the board. Ron trailed behind and couldn’t seem to find his step. Steve had a wide lead and seemed like it was going to be a blowout, but Ron managed to catch up a bit before losing 15-10. A brief intermission with a few sips of water (the fountain is at an astounding 29,532 bottles of water saved. After some brief analysis, we have discovered that we could crush this number if we were to open up an airport terminal somewhere within AVTEC gym). Steve started the serve in the second game, but Ron converted the possession and gained a 4-point lead. Steve wasn’t having any of it, and he hunkered down and beat Ron. He beat Ron bad. 15-6! A striking combination of kill shots and Stellar Serves (as observed by Georg Wilhelm Stellar during his daring voyage in the north Pacific Ocean in 1741. The Stellar Serve was thought to have went extinct sometime in the early 19th century but resurfaced, eerily, in Southern California in 1982). What a solid start to the season for Steve!

Zeke v Fred

In 1965, a mop topped group from Glen Canyon harmonized together:

To everything (Turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (Turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose under heaven

Fred Georges purpose under heaven is to serve incredibly wicked serves and hand down hard-earned skills in the racquetball court to newcomers. On this very fine day in early October, Zeke Churchill climbed his way out of the Gold League to join this fine group of players in Platinum. No blood rituals were done here, per se, Zeke just had to fight and claw his way through the Gold League to earn his place. The two got in the court, shook off the cob webs accumulated through the summer and got to work.

Zeke took the first set with a stunning victory of 15-5. Fred is no stranger to adversity. He got back into the court and looked at Zeke and said “watch this!” Within moments, Zeke walked to the front desk to report the score. “He beat me.” Fred evened out the score winning 5-15 . The match was tied exactly, and the two played a tie breaking round to 11. Zeke was feeling the yips, and felt his time was nigh. He thought, “I might go down, but heck, I will not go down easy!” Fred continued his barrage of passing shots. The kind of shot that mows grass, inches from the ground. When the dust settled. Fred walked out of his first game of the season victorious, winning the tie breaker 11-8.

What a start to the season!
