It's that time of the week for your favorite article about your favorite thing to do in Seward; Softball!

Boy oh boy was this past Monday a whirlwind of high-octane, grimace-producing duels that called on heroes to save the day and foes to fall flat on the surface of the field.

Let's start it off with the Hose Jockeys hosting the Baby Franks. If you thought fire fighters would be kind to babies, think again. The Hose Jockeys came out spraying hits all over the field including three inside the parkers, two off the bat of Andy and one from Jaden. But the Baby Franks held fast, led by Mel with 4 RBIs and the combo of Russ and Patrick scoring four runs. The Baby Franks spewed out 18 runs as they held on for an 18-17 victory. They now sit even at 3-3 while the Hose Jockeys fall to 0-5.

The initial game at the top field featured a battle between Spring Creek and ILWU. Spring Creek sprung to an early lead led by the bats of Darren, Stephanie and Mike. But the Longshoremen chipped away at the lead and dramatically tied it when Case crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh. It was the second tie of the year as the game ended in a stalemate at 8-8. Both teams had a chance to get a W as they headed into double headers next.

For ILWU they stayed put and took on the Master Batters. The frustration of the tie clearly weighed on ILWU's mind as they released an onslaught of runs onto the Master Batters right from the get-go. Case scored four of ILWU's 19 runs as they mercied the Master Batters by the score of 19-4. ILWU's record now sits at 2-4-1 just ahead of the Master Batters at 1-3-1.

Spring Creek was feeling the same about their tie and erupted for 12 runs in the first three innings in their double header against Major Marine. Major Marine tightened up their pitching and defense from that point on, highlighted by some stellar plays from Chris at short. Led by Josh's 3RBI night, Spring Creek's lead was just a bit too much for Major Marine to overcome as Spring Creek held on for the 12-9 victory. Spring Creek improves their record to 4-2-1 while Major Marine continued their night by heading into a double-header in the prime time slot.

It wasn't Major Marine's night though as they hit a wall in the Hammerheads. Darian stifled their bats as he pitched a gem for the Hammerheads and led them to an 8-4 win. Emma led the way offensively for the Hammerheads with three hits and a RBI while Marissa knocked in a pair for Major Marine with a 7th inning triple. The win improves the Hammerheads to 6-0 while the loss takes Major Marine down to 2-3-1.

And for the grand finale, the Soft Balls and Seward Insurance were putting on a show for the spectators to the west. Leading 5-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh, Seward Insurance was hoping to stay right on the heels of the Hammerheads with another victory. The Soft Balls were anything but soft in this game however. With one out and the winning run on the bases, Maggie came through with a walk-off single to secure a victory for the Soft Balls and put their name on the radar as a team not to be taken softly. The Soft Balls improve to 2-3 while Seward Insurance falls to 5-2.
