July 1969.. Millions of Americans watch with anticipation as the United States stands on the precipice of history. Apollo 11 orbits the moon and Neil Armstong and Buzz Aldrin prepare for their epic walk. Of course inspired in large part by the popularity of the “moon shot” racquetball technique, the Apollo missions begin connecting the sport of racquetball to American scientific development and the technological frontier. A year earlier in the height of their popularity The Beatles release their now infamous self titled album, nicknamed The White Album by global fans in response to its stark white cover. In a 1969 interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, George Harrison reveals that the album cover was inspired by the stark white walls of a racquetball court and the feeling of joy he gets from “watching the Americans swing string”. Fast forward to 1971 and NARD is again dominating headlines through promotion of a young athlete named Jennifer Disco. Disco garners massive attention worldwide for her unorthodox serve and play style which she names The Disco Finger, The Hustle, and The Bump. Along with this rhythmic and groovy play style Disco’s returns pound against the front wall like a bass line, inspiring musicians nationwide. Soon the dance music subculture of Disco takes the nation by storm, and Disco continues her domination in the court with 4 major tournament championships through the early 1970’s.
Week 6 action in Seward’s gold racquetball league saw one match take place at the scheduled time. Let’s dive in.

Match 1: Brad v Izzy
Izzy arrived early for his 5pm matchup and asked me over the Sports and Rec counter if I had any tips for playing against Brad. I turned slowly from my task to look Izzy directly in the eye, “Izzy” I said, “If Brad gets into the service box… run”. As Izzy gained the first serve of game 1 he smiled “It’s Brad that should be running…” WHOOSH a ripper backhand serve and Izzy takes an early lead 1-0. The two combatants are about as evenly matched as can be at the outset, trading serves 5 or 6 times, neither coming away with a point until Izzy fires off a couple more daggers to take a 4-0 lead. A cold wind begins blowing from the North. Brad takes the serve as clouds begin to fill the evening sky. A crack of lightning in the darkness - BAM, Brad’s point. Another flash and bang - KACHOW, Brad with 2 and then 3. The electrical storm grows in intensity as Brad piles up more and more points. As the hair on our necks rise the power at AVTEC fades to a dim, but the court is illuminated with electrical discharge. Izzy tries valiantly to redirect the powerful surge but falls in game one 15-9.
As game 2 starts Brad immediately hits the air vent on the ceiling twice and I had to remind him he was playing against Izzy not the air vent, he quickly gets his head back in the game and jumps out to a comfortable lead. One of Izzy’s greatest strengths in the cube is his immaculate passing game and Brad soon learned the hard way. The two trade serves until Izzy begins eating into Brad’s lead. After an unfortunate bounce off of the glass leaves Izzy without his corrective glasses, the game soon gets out of hand. Without his eyesight Izzy drops a couple more points and Brad is able to coast into a game 2 victory by a score of 15-5.
