WEEK FOUR
Kirk is in Japan. Russ is in Juneau. Courtney is on the treadmill. Clay is watching racquetball on youtube wearing his headband. Danny is in Hawaii. Wes is at The Breeze. We had one game this week during the scheduled league time - Captain Steve v Captain Ron. Let’s dig in.
Ron v Steve
Season after season, Ron and Steve have played exciting games that keep you so close to the edge of your seat you end up on the floor. The two got into the court and started an efficient two ball warm-up. Steve practiced serves as Ron worked on agility in the back court. It looked like a proper racquetball Dojo. The two lagged the ball. Ron muttered under his breath, “It’s all in the hips, all in the hips.” Alas, it isn’t all in the hips folks. You have to use your brain a wee bit to get the ball as close to the service line to win the first serve, turns out. Steve took to the serving box and got the first game underway. Both players were quick on their feet, so much so they were almost jumping out of their shoes – stinky! Ron took possession of the game and generated a lead using bunts and passing shots that saw him standing on a pile of points at 11-4. Steve paid this no mind and strapped in to score eleven points in a row. It was an incredible performance, and the two duked it out to the very end. At the end of the first game, Ron walked out with a win of 15 to 13. The two took a brief break, water, considered leaving to avoid cardiac arrest, then got back into the dungeon of racquets. Ron started in the service box, and was determined to end the game as quickly as possible. Steve was in great form, however, and the game was close all the way to the end of the second match. Steve gained possession of the front court and took it to the finish line, beating Ron out 15-11. Ron stepped out and wept a little bit. Steve was ready for more! In the tie-breaker round, Ron lost possession of the service box quickly and Steve went on a 7-point streak. Uh oh! Would Ron get in his head and fade away like Swayze in the 1990 classic, Ghost. Would he be able to whip up a winning performance? Whoopi Goldberg whispered in his ear, “Ronnie, you in danger girl.” Ron snapped to it, and something clicked, though reportedly he still doesn’t know exactly what that was. The game became tied up, and Ron stepped into the lead. Steve held the game at 8-10 with Ron in the lead for several rallies, before Ron finished the game with a passing shot to the back right corner at the glass. The two opponents were happy with their performances, and looked towards the future.
