Basketballers!

Santa is hard at work driving his elves into overtime. There is much to do for the Christmas season: polishing sleigh bells, eliminating persona non gratas off the ‘Nice’ list forever, and cleaning Ms. Claus’ cabin so she can relax while hubs travels the globe in a single night with a worlds worth of presents. At Sports and Recreation, we are wrapping up all of our sports leagues. Here is how Adult Basketball finished off for the Fall 2025 season.

ILWU v 907 Elite

To kick off the week of playoff games, we had the fourth seeded ILWU matched up against first seed 907 Elite. With a streak of wins in the late season, we were excited to see how the team would stack up against the undefeated 907 Elite after a season of making gains as a team. 907 Elite started off strong in the first half, with Janus Leo (11 points) making plays from inside and outside the key. ILWU made good plays and had some solid defensive set ups in the first half.. However, they struggled to keep pace with the undefeated team, with 907 Elite leading the game 40-24 at half time. There was a heightened amount of squeaking shoes in the second half, which usually indicates that people are trying really hard. Despite the effort, ILWU could not make up the gap that formed in the first half, and 907 Elite took home another victory and set themselves up to play the championship game. Final score: 71-39 907 Elite.

AVTEC v The Runners

The night kept rolling along, with song selections ranging from Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World to some incendiary fret board work from Angus Young on ACDC’s hit Thunderstruck. Were we ready to be Thunderstruck by the coming game? Hard to tell. With this match, we had the 2nd seed AVTEC students against our 3rd seed team: The Runners. These two teams have the leagues two top-scorers: The Runners’ Mykel Mysing (team high 25 points) and AVTEC’s Nic Kitsyuk. The first half of this game was cut-throat, with the AVTEC students barely in the lead at 23-21. In the second half, Nic Kitsyuk (game high 29 points) came alive after a period of dormancy and propelled his team into a “write-your-mother” lead. By the final horn, Runners won 63-50.

AVTEC v ILWU

To wrap up their season, AVTEC and ILWU played one last time to determine who would get 3rd and 4th place. AVTEC was dominant throughout the entirety of this game, with a full cheering section and a bench deeper than Lake Victoria. ILWU struggled to get 5 bodies onto the court for their final game of the season, but by golly, they did it! AVTEC’s Nic Kitsyuk (game high 28 points) led his team to a formidable lead at halftime. ILWU’s Jack Gardner (team high 22 points) played one of his best games of the season, leading his team in points consistently throughout the game. Unfortunately, his efforts would not be enough to make the game competitive. AVTEC snatched 3rd place for the Fall 2025 league, winnign their final game of the season 69 to 46.

907 Elite v The Runners

With the final game in our midst, the undefeated 907 Elite and The Runners took to the court for what would be an exciting championship game. The Runners came into this final game with a ton of energy. Mykel Mysing (team high 13 points) and Jesse Fuentes (12 points) led their team to a 23-20 advantage at half time. 907 Elite reached deep in the second half. Ronnie Jackson (16 points) and Raheem Cooper (game high 17 points) concocted the perfect recipe to take back the lead and propel themselves to glory. At the end of the game, 907 Elite was victorious with a 60-44 victory. Upon the horn sounding for the final time for the 2025 calendar year, 2 million pounds of confetti were released from the ceiling. People kissed and celebrated. Those last two sentences were totally fabricated. In all honesty, 907 Elite accomplished something huge this season, with 15 consecutive wins and excellent sportsmanlike conduct in display throughout the season.
