Week 7

Seven weeks are done, and there are four more to go in the gold racquetball league this season! There were some big matches in this week of games; Steve vs Benny vying for a playoff position, Russ vs Wes in a long-time rival match and finally the two top players in the league, Kirk vs Courtney. Let’s see what went down.

Brian v Fred

Things started with a bang this week as a heated contest between Brian and Fred took place. Tensions were high as the two traded kill shots back and forth in game one. In a tightly contested battle at five a piece, Brian decided enough was enough and went on a run to close out game one by the score of 15-6. Things heated up even more in game two when the lines for mistakes and perfect shots were blurred as Fred took to a 14-10 lead. But once again, Brian found a surge of energy to go on a run and closed Fred out with a 16-14 match win! Brian jumps Fred in the standings at 2-5 while Fred drops to 1-6.

Russ vs Wes

Feeling confident with his new laser serve while also trying to cripple his opponent the night before with poison, Wes came into this matchup with a real swagger. And that swagger continued to show as he hastily got out to 5-0 lead. But Russ finally got on the serve and began a string of serves and passing shots that had Wes testing every hit he could manage. Russ took game one, 15-8. With the loss of Wes’ swagger, Russ saw an opportunity to put the match away, as he quickly built a lead that Wes could not manage to fight back from. Russ won game two by the score of 15-6 to improve to 5-0 on the season. The loss drops Wes to 2-4.

Steve vs Benny

The master of three games, Benny was hoping to make this a quick one with plans for a big snowboard weekend ahead. Steve wanted the same, but the two were nearly inseparable in their scoring. Long bouts of scoreless volleying ensued as the two took the match to three games. Ooooos and Ahhhhs could be heard from the other side of the glass wall where we all watched hoping the match would somehow end so we could get to the last match of the evening. Like a lingering war wearing down all their defenses the game hung in the balance until the last swing which Benny lost in the light allowing Steve to be the victor. Both Steve and Benny now sport 4-3 records.

Kirk vs Courtney

The match of champions is what the papers were writing coming into the week. Sports and Rec hasn’t seen a different name on the trophy besides Kirk or Courtney in five seasons. Was this a championship match preview? Kirk did everything in his power to bring his name back to the top, fighting through a lingering elbow injury, hitting the most wicked seesaw z serve anyone has seen and cutting off ceiling shots to make Courtney test her stamina. It was Courtney who won consecutive games though, as her textbook play made the day a winning one for her and gave Kirk his first loss of the season. Courtney won 15-8 both games and improved to 7-0 while Kirk fell to 5-1.

Danny vs Jamie

This was a game played earlier in the day. Jamie has been adapting her game to try and put the pressure on her opponents and she did so in game one, but Danny loves the pressure and held her at bay with a 15-9 victory. Getting into a rhythm, Danny strolled in game two with a 15-3 victory and vaulted himself into the fourth playoff spot for now at 4-3. Jamie drops to 0-7.

Stay tuned for many makeup games this week as both Ron and Russ face off vs Clay, while Russ takes on Kirk early in the week.

Match-ups to look forward to in week 8 include a boss vs employee situation in Russ vs Benny, a battle of 4-3’s between Steve and Danny and an all ladies match-up featuring Jamie and Courtney.
