Week 6
A full week of games in the book and things are as convoluted as ever. Makeup games to be played, upsets all over the place and a giant mash of peanut butter and jelly in the middle of the standings as players try to secure a spot in the top four. Here’s what went down!
Fred v Russ
Back from a month hiatus Russ stepped into the court against the savviest player in the league, Fred! Both leaned hard into their sniper-like serves and what seemed like a friendly game of racquetball quickly turned into an elongated battle of sweat and swears, (mostly coming from Russ)! Russ battled Fred to a 15-7 victory in game one. In game two the Trilogy of Lord of the Rings could have been finished in the time that Fred and Russ held the score at 13-11, but finally the Eagles arrived to rescue Russ from Fred’s Mordor eruption of serves to give him the 15-11 game and match win. Russ improves to 4-0 while Fred falls to 1-5.
Ron v Brian
They say practice pays off when it comes to sports. And let me tell you, Brian has been practicing! What does that mean for his opponent Ron? Bad news! Brian came out on fire as he handily put Ron away in game one by the score of 15-4. However, Ron remembered who he was in game two; a man whose job involves sports and racquetball. Determined to clean up his game just like how Batman cleans up Gotham’s crime, Ron came out in a cape-swinging fashion to win game two by the score of 15-5. It all came down to game three, where Brian continued to push back and Ron’s crime-stopping could only go so far as Brian took the match with an 11-6 victory. Brian now sits at 1-5 while Ron falls to 2-4.
Steve v Wes
Wes came into this week's match with a whole new array of serves that were spell-bounding. There isn’t a serve that Steve hasn’t seen though. Steve handled all Wes could cast at him like Harry Potter fending off the cruciatus curse from Voldemort. There were moments where the two battled, stuck like a forcefield was between them, neither able to get the winning blow. But Steve eventually broke the forcefield to the match victory by the scores of 15-7 and 15-12. Steve evens out his record at 3-3, while Wes falls to 2-3.
Clay v Courtney
Will she ever lose? Some say yes, most say no! Is there a kryptonite to Courtney’s super-heroic racquetball prowess? Clay was not that kryptonite this week as Courtney cruised to consecutive 15-8 victories and improves to 6-0 while Clay drops to 2-2.
Benny v Jamie
Coming off a near victory against undefeated Kirk, Benny came in this past week as a new contender for the racquetball playoffs! Jamie didn’t like that one bit though and befuddled Benny with her serves and pinpoint placement as she took game one 16-14. Jamie seemed to awaken the sleeping giant in Benny and he came out like Goliath to win game two by the score of 15-8. Heading into the critical third game, Jamie mustered as much of David as she could to take down Goliath, but Benny squeaked by with the 11-9 match victory. Benny now sits at 4-2 on the season. Jamie takes the loss and drops to 0-6.
Danny v Kirk
In the final match of the week, the fierce rivals of Danny and Kirk took to the walled-in room to battle. Swinging their racquets like their lightsabers the two clashed, ducked and spun to a magical game one duel with Kirk slicing his way to a narrow 16-14 victory. Weakened by the saber-esque racquet of Kirk, Danny could not fend off Kirk in game two as Kirk swung his way to a 15-7 match victory. Kirk remains undefeated at 5-0 while Danny falls to 3-3.
