Well folks week three is in the books and today begins a whole new era in the racquetball timeline. As of today, we are officially halfway through the season! While this may be a fun benchmark, everyone should be sad. I also have an unfortunate announcement. Adam is officially dropping out of the league. Due to a knee injury, Adam has decided to take it easy for the next few weeks.
Mel v. Chad
To start off week 3’s games, we started off with Mel v. Chad. While this game was between two talented racqueteers, a theme is starting to appear with one of said players. During this league, there have only been two games that have gone to 3 matches. In these two games, Mel has been the common denominator. I don’t know what you're up to Mel but I have my eyes on you.
Anywho, this game, much like Mel’s last game, was exhausting to watch. One thing I have learned over the past few weeks, is that Mel will absolutely put her body in harm's way in order to win a match. Most people would be quickly deterred from diving in racquetball by the hard wood floors, or the walls that are made out of military grade diamond coated skull crusher cement. Not Mel. Mel dives on that like it's a pillow fort. Chad on the other hand sustained some injuries earlier on in the league that he is happily ignoring for the win. What I am trying to say is that both these players are willing to sacrifice their wellbeing to the league, and I respect it.(SPRD does not condone the practice of injuring one’s self for a win.) With two competitors like this, you’re gonna get a brutal game, and that's exactly what we got. Mel took off in the beginning and managed to hold onto the lead while Chad slowly inched his way further up the score board. Game one ended 15-11: Mel. Game two began and guess what? It was also brutal. After about 20 minutes of what I can only describe as recreational punishment, Chad managed to seal up game two with a score of 11-15: Chad. With a completely tied score, game three had begun. Game three was a blur to be honest. By this stage, the intensity had gotten to me. I wasn’t even fully aware of who I was or why I was in front of a racquetball court. All I know is that my score sheet said “7-11: Chad”.
Francisco v. Doyle
What happens when you put a previous champion of the silver league against the previous champion of the rec league? You get Francisco v. Doyle. Doyle is well known in the Silver League as “the player to beat”. He’s been around for a couple of seasons and we’ve all learned that fear is the right approach when walking into a court with him. Francisco, on the other hand, is fresh. For the Silver spoons who haven’t paid much attention to the rec league in the past, Francisco can be a bit of a surprise. One thing I learned from this game, fear might be the appropriate reaction with both of these gentlemen. Francisco stepped into the court for the first time against Doyle, and spent game one adjusting. While Doyle took this game relatively quickly, Fracisco was just building up for game two. Doyle managed to take game one with a score of 5-15. What no one knew however, is that Francisco was collecting data the whole game. Watching Doyle, paying attention to his serves and swings. Like a computer, Francisco was absorbing as much data as possible. Game two began, and to Doyle’s surprise, Francisco had evolved. Much like a Pokemon’s evolution, Francisco became Franciscosaurus. Serving first, Francisco immediately started putting points on the board. Before Doyle knew what had happened, Francisco was well on his way to victory. Doyle, not to be outdone so easily, recognized the moment and started pulling out all the moves. After what felt like an eternity, Doyle managed to take the lead last second, ending the game with a score of 12-15. Stay tuned folks, I have a feeling their next match will be worth a watch.
Katrick
Katrick? Whose Katrick you ask? Well when two people love each other very much, sometimes their souls and their names become one. This may explain the phenomena that you’re seeing in front of you today. Kat and Patrick decided to do something so brave, relationship counselors across the nation are in shock. They played a competitive game of racquetball against each other. In order to get a better understanding of this situation, I decided to interview a local Relationship Therapist to see what they had to say. “Well, along with docking a boat, and playing “Overcooked”, we’ve found that racquetball can be one of the big tests for a young couple to face”.
Anywho, let's talk about the match a little. Game one began and the competitive nature of these two immediately became apparent. While these two do seem to enjoy each other's company outside of the court, they were both looking for blood inside the court. Game one went by, both giving it everything they had. In the end, Patrick managed to pull out the win with a score of 15-4. Game two began and it was clear Patrick was catching his stride. He was unstoppable. Ultimately, only letting Kat score one point, Patrick had sealed the deal. Undeterred, Kat emerged from the court with all the confidence of someone who had just won the World Racquetball Championship. When asked for comment, this is what Kat had to say, “My dazzling twirls are what took Patrick out.
Adam v James
This week saw a number of games, including some make-up games, pushing Adam and James’ game late in the evening. With only 30 minutes till close, both players were looking to end this game quickly. After doing a preemptive make up game against Kat, James was forced to immediately turn around and do it again. Game one began, and there was a healthy back and forth. While James was moving into his second straight hour of racquetball, Adam was fresh. Watching the game, you may have assumed the opposite. While James was calm and cool in appearance, Adam was doing his best to catch his breath. Despite this dynamic, Adam was ultimately able to take the win with a score of 15-4. Though Adam pulled off the win, it is important to note that James never even pulled out his secret move. Adam was left to wonder what the game might have looked like had James done his famous Matrix style wall jump.
The next game turned out to be a special game. Not because of the score, or the gameplay. The next game was special because, unbeknownst to everyone, this would be Adam’s final game of the league. Adam won this game, but is eager to watch the rest of the league from the scorer’s seat.
