Basketballers!

With the anticipation of Halloween on everyone’s minds, we strapped in for another action-packed week of basketball. Would ILWU bring home a win? Would SPRD staff members be able to find a non-child sized ref shirt for their referees? The plot thickened and unfolded. Here’s how it went:

Tuesday, October 28th

907 Elite v The Runners

To start off the week was a match between first place 907 Elite and The Runners, who currently occupy the first place spot. 907 Elite fired up and away putting points on the board while The Runners got their engines going. After four minutes, The Runners got their act together and started playing a fine game of basketball. With 907 Elite driven by Ronnie Jackson (team high 21 points) and Talon Lemme (18 points), the team in black were on the attack and had 31 points on the board at half to The Runners 22-points. Coming into the second half, The Runners saw an improved performance due to Jessie Fuentes (16 points) and Mykel Mysing (game high 21 points) hustling to put points on the board. Mysing, battling with ankle injuries this season, actually accepted the his first ice pack of the season during this game from the table. He cracked it, felt its power, then threw it away. Tied his shoes  up and kept going. Shortly after this, Andy Nelson of 907 Elite pulled off a crossover that left me feeling rather spiritual. Is this a man or a demigod? By game's end, I still had no answer and 907 Elite had won 67 to 55, securing their 7th straight win for the season.

AVTEC v ILWU

To end night one of week four was a matchup between AVTEC and ILWU, our 2nd and 4th place teams, respectively. For starters, it is worth mentioning that ILWU continues to improve their game throughout this season. Their large point deficits have decreased, and they even hold the lead on the scoreboard for the start of many of their games. This evening’s match was a great example of that, with everyone on their roster lending a helping hand to put some points on the board. By halftime, it was a one point game in ILWU’s favor at 27-26. Unfortunately, they were up against a student body that has extra energy reserves ready to be unleashed. Nic Kitsyuk threw a devastating 30-points up onto the scoreboard for a game, and Jamen Anderson rained a grotesque amount of 3-pointers from the heavens that pushed AVTEC into the lead. By game’s end, the students had claimed a victory winning 67-50.

The Runners v AVTEC

With the town’s candy buckets and awaiting the screams and laughter of children, everyone felt compelled to play an outstanding game of basketball. The Runners took the court in hopes of beating their 2nd place rival in this match. We started out with a close game with the student body tripping over their own feet to get their game going. The game was completely tied up four minutes before half time at 22 to 22. However, the students led by Nic Kitsyuk (game high 30 points) turned up their play a couple of notches and grew their lead to 26-37 by halftime. In fact, in this explosive four minutes of play, Mr. Kitsyuk answered prayers that many have solemnly offered for a slam dunk with pressure on the floor at the end of this first half. We were all stunned. It will live in my memory until someone does that again. Mykel Mysing (team high 25 points) of The Runners pulled a Mykel Mysing and exploded like a wildfire, scoring 14 points in the second half alone. He and AVTEC’s Kitsyuk have been duking it out this season to contend for the league's top-scorer, and the end of this game was a spectacle watching the two perform. At the time of this writing, Kitsyuk leads the league with 25 points per game. AVTEC took home a win with 76-55.

907 Elite v ILWU

To finish off our fourth week of games was a match between our first and last place teams: 907 Elite and ILWU. As I have mentioned before, ILWU keeps getting better and better. This could not be made any more clear than the fact that ILWU started off in the lead for this game. The intensity was high, as the two teams were tied at 18 to 18 with six minutes left in the first half. Shortly after this juncture, the ILWU team tired out and 907 Elite started to pull ahead in the points. By halftime, 907 Elite was up 31-20. Raheem Cooper (game high 22 points) and Ronnie “Buckets” Jackson (15 points) turned the heat up at the end of the first half to gain this advantage. ILWU’s top scorer, Bjorn Nilsoon (team high 20 points), was aligned with greatness in the second half and he managed to score 14 points in this half alone. It would not be enough to make it a competitive game, as 907 Elite’s Janus Leo (12 points) and Talon Lemme (13 points) started firing off 3-pointers to ILWU’s disdain. 907 Elite wins their 8th consecutive win and are currently undefeated.
