Week 1 Recap & Standings
What is the origin of time? Is it a phenomenon that is relevant only to sentient beings? Are rocks aware of time? We know what does certainly react to time, and that is the group of individuals that make up the Adult Basketball League. The days grow shorter after a busy summer season, and adults in town start strapping on brightly colored shoes with massive amounts of cushioning and get ready to play ball.
We got the Fall 2025 Adult Basketball League started on Tuesday, October 8th at AVTEC gym. If you are ever looking for a bit of community engagement and squeaky shoes, join us every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8pm in the gymnasium to follow along. Here is the recap for week one:
Tuesday, October 8th
AVTEC v The Runners
To get us started for Fall 2025, we had a match between this semester's AVTEC students and The Runners. The Runners did the league right by supplying SPRD two referees from their team, Mykel Mysing and Jesse Fuentes, to help officiate throughout the season. After registrations were all filled out and everyone was ready to go, we settled in for one 20-minute half of basketball to get the league underway. The AVTEC students, led by Nic Kitsyuk (game high 17 points), got to work immediately supplying points from inside the key and across the 3-point line. The Runners Jessie Fuentes (team high 15 points) and Mykel Mysing (9 points) kept the pressure on and the ball moving, doing their best to sink buckets against AVTEC's hard-working defense. The game was close during all 20 minutes of the half, with the student body eventually taking the win by two points. The two teams shook hands after the match and we looked forward to a friendly and engaging season. AVTEC wins 34-32.
ILWU v 907 Elite
Next up for the evening was a match between the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) and 907 Elite. The teams were excited to see each other after a long summer of Longshoring, Warehousing & being extremely Elite. A buzz was in the air - it's game time. Referee Benny Flores got the game going and away we went. The newly formed 907 Elite were living up to their namesake, taking control of the game early on and putting distance between themselves and their opponents on the scoreboard. They were propelled forward by Talon Lemme (11 points game high) and Ronnie "Buckets" Jackson (8 points), and maintained a steady lead. The crowd on the bleachers thickened as the night wore on, basketball season is in full swing! ILWU's Nick Swan (7 points team high) and Ryan Gardner (6 points) and company did their best to shrink the difference in points, but it was not going to be their night. 907 Elite took home the win 34-23.
Thursday, October 10th
AVTEC v ILWU
With the first games behind us and the proverbial cobwebs dusted off the shelves, the teams were ready to turn the pressure up and get sassy. Quite literally. Our excellent referees responded to some poor behavior quickly, delving out technical fouls to the offending parties. We sincerely hope they are the last we see all season! Now that we have that out of our way, let's get to what we are really here for: basketball!
To start off the night, we had a close game between the AVTEC students and The International Longsharing and Warehouse Union blokes. The game got underway, and ILWU was waking up presumably after a long day of work. AVTEC, led by their point-scorer Nic Kitsyuk (team high 21 points) into a consistently played game. It wasn't until eight minutes into the game that ILWU woke up from their slumber and started putting points on the board. Jake Gardner (8 points), possibly the youngest player in league, started sinking layups for the woeful ILWU, igniting a fire they knew was inside them but could not feel. The score tightened up greatly by the time the first twenty minute half was over. Coming into the second half, ILWU's Jake Boulden (game high 21 points) and Ryan Gardner (11 points) were driving their green team to work more like a machine and give the AVTEC students a run for their money. The amplified effort was not to be enough, however, with AVTEC taking the win 66-58.
907 Elite v The Runners
To finish up the first week of games was a match up between 907 Elite and The Runners. The two teams have black and white jersey's and what we witnessed in the following hour was what seemed to be a herd of zebra hurdling across the Serengeti. The two teams were camouflaged within their own ranks on the court. Our scorekeeper and time keeper had to smack themselves to keep faces and names straight. What are we even looking at? Luckily, with years of training focus techniques and laser-like vision, we were able to get the job at hand completed. I am just realizing now that 907 Elite had only 5 players that night. With that in mind, they absolutely dominated the court for the two twenty minute halves that followed after the tip-off. Raheem Cooper (game high 27 points) was cherry picking 2-point layups throughout the entirety of the game. Ronnie "Buckets" Jackson (23 points) did his usual "should this guy actually just be in the NBA" routine of sinking a vast majority of the shots he took. By half time, the score was 49-23 in the Elite's favor. In the second, The Runners did their best to retaliate and get some points on the board, with Mykel Mysing (12 points) and Jessie Fuentes (team high 13 points) utilizing their ball-handling skills and athletic drives to even the scales. Unfortunately, this would not be enough to cut the cake. 907 Elites Talon Lemme (26 points) turned on the afterburners in the second-half. It was as if he was putting together an ESPN highlight reel for himself. This escalation in "bucket economics" culminated in a whopping win of 96-54 for 907 Elite, giving them an awesome early average point differential of 26.5 points per game.
We want to thank our referees for helping us run such a smooth league. Thank you to the players for your sportsmanship and highlighting how athletics can keep a community healthy in the winter.
