The City of Seward needs your help. We are asking you to adopt a flower bed/planter for the summer. Your responsibilities will be to plant a selection of provided flowers - pick up after June 3rd, 2026.
The flowers are located at the old animal shelter at 412 6th Ave. between Madison St. and Jefferson St. Feel free to pick up Sunday-Friday between the hours of 9AM and 3PM.
Parks and Rec will give everyone a bucket w/bone meal, trowel and gloves. The flowers are in either four or six packs so you may also want to bring a box to transport your flowers or there are paper bags available for use. The bed's and planter's soil has already been enhanced with compost and bone meal (please reach out to Maggie if you find your bed/planter hasn't been amended yet). When transplanting, put a tablespoon of bone meal in each hole to help decrease plant shock and enhance blooming. The flowers, buckets and bone meal are inside the first small storage shed at the old animal shelter (Green Door). It is recommended to put nine flowers in a 24” planter (the size of the concrete containers).
For aesthetics, plant in groups of three considering plant heights and colors. In addition, there is a detailed “Garden Bible” that has pictures, flower selection recommendations, and descriptions of each bed/planter. It will be at the City of Seward Parks and Rec Office at the Annex Building kitty corner to City Hall (old library) office hours are M-F 8:00-4:00. This is a wonderful resource, organized alphabetically by garden bed area. It is highly recommended that you check this out before collecting your transplants. Your other responsibilities will be to maintain the bed/planter by watering, weeding and deadheading (visit at least once every two weeks). At the end of the season we ask that you tidy up the bed/planter for the winter.
